I have sketched for as long as I can remember , and if I'm truly honest I get a lot of pleasure from going out and sketching outdoors . I used to paint 'plein air ' , but now find I feel too much pressure to produce a finished painting on the spot , especially if I get onlookers about me . Sketching in a sketchbook , doesn't have the same same pressure , after all it's only a sketchbook !
Whilst out sketching with a local art group , it struck me , that although we were all sketching , we were all also taking photos . With out exception everybody's sketches were more interesting than their photos .
A photo captures the entire scene in front of you , and often dulls the shadow areas , although it can be a useful reminder , the sketch captures something else .
This is a sketch I painted of a view of East Harting Hants and a photo of the same view .
